Pittsburgh, 1904: A new century has dawned, but slavery remains a living memory. Citizen Barlow, a man wracked with secret guilt and desperate for redemption, arrives at the doorstep of Aunt Ester, 285-year-old spiritual healer and renowned “washer of souls.” Thus begins a mystical odyssey under the Atlantic to the City of Bones; a journey full of music and vibrant theatricality, as urgent and expansive as the soul of America itself.
The TheatreWorks mainstage directorial debut of Artistic Director Tim Bond—close friend of August Wilson and long-time interpreter of his work—Gem of the Ocean is the first chronological entry in the Pulitzer Prize-winning American Century Cycle, dramatizing African American life throughout the 20th century.
