TheatreWorks Artistic Associate and Director of New Works Giovanna Sardelli (pictured) will direct the World Premiere of Kareem Fahmy's "A Distinct Society" as part of TheatreWorks Silicon Valley's 52nd Season. TheatreWorks will present "A Distinct Society" April 5-30, 2023 at Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts.

By chance and geographic anomaly, a quiet library in northern Vermont straddles the U.S.-Canada border. Most years it’s just a curiosity, but during the “Muslim ban,” it becomes an unlikely meeting place for an Iranian family who find themselves on opposite sides of an invisible divide. When the Québécoise librarian, a U.S. border patrol officer, and a local teenager become involved, all must choose between breaking the law and saving themselves.

The image reads Ragtime The Musical. The background is a gradient of blue at the top to yellow on the bottom. Around the word Ragtime are images of a car, a fist, a piano, dynamite, the eye of providence, musical notes, a rope, and fireworks.

"It was the music of something beginning..." Set to the syncopated rhythms of a hopeful new age, this musical masterpiece traces the intersecting lives of an inventive Jewish immigrant, a courageous Black pianist, and a conflicted White mother at the dawn of the 20th century. Interweaving the delights of vaudeville, baseball, and nickelodeon with the hurly-burly of labor rallies and the discord of racial unrest, Ragtime is an impassioned, jubilant, and timeless tribute to the American Dream.

The image reads August Wilson's Gem of the Ocean, the background of the image is a gradient of light blue, teal and beige. A drawing of a sail ship is in the center. In the bottom right corner there is an image of writing scrolled across the corner.

Pittsburgh, 1904: A new century has dawned, but slavery remains a living memory. Citizen Barlow, a man wracked with secret guilt and desperate for redemption, arrives at the doorstep of Aunt Ester, 285-year-old spiritual healer and renowned “washer of souls.” Thus begins a mystical odyssey under the Atlantic to the City of Bones; a journey full of music and vibrant theatricality, as urgent and expansive as the soul of America itself.
The TheatreWorks mainstage directorial debut of Artistic Director Tim Bond—close friend of August Wilson and long-time interpreter of his work—Gem of the Ocean is the first chronological entry in the Pulitzer Prize-winning American Century Cycle, dramatizing African American life throughout the 20th century.
